Abstract | The Amazon Basin contains the largest extent of tropical forest on Earth, over 5 million km2, and accounts for a large proportion of the planets animal and plant species. However, over the past 25 years rapid development has led to the deforestation of over 500,000 km2 in Brazil alone. A small number of field studies carried out over the last 15 years showed local changes in the water, energy, carbon and nutrient cycling, and atmospheric composition caused by deforestation and biomass burning. |
